COMMON QUERIES

Have a question you’d like to ask? We're committed to giving clients the best care and experience we can.

Check out the answers to the FAQs below, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any additional questions.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THERAPY?

Each therapy session may look different based on your therapist’s individual style and their efforts to tailor the session to your specific needs and goals. You may spend a session learning new skills, exploring your past, or experiencing challenging emotions. Throughout it all, you can expect to sit and talk with a therapist who is wholly focused on listening to your concerns and working with you to find ways to provide you with more stability, understanding, insight, and satisfaction.

ARE YOU MEETING WITH PEOPLE VIRTUALLY OR IN-PERSON?

Currently, we are offering both in-person and virtual sessions. In person sessions are conducted in our office located in Capitol Hill, just two blocks from the Union Station Metro stop. Virtual sessions are conducted from a private location, using confidential and secure video technology through Simple Practice. We encourage you to speak with your therapist about which option works best for you. We are happy to provide flexible services that meet your needs.

HOW LONG IS A THERAPY SESSION ?

Individual sessions are 50 minutes in length. Group sessions are typically 75-90 minutes in length.

HOW OFTEN DO I MEET WITH MY THERAPIST?

Most people attend therapy weekly or every other week. It is common for people to decide to increase how often they see their therapist in times of intense stress and decrease the frequency as they begin to transition towards ending therapy. You and your therapist will work together to find a frequency that works for your treatment.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE BEFORE I FEEL BETTER?

How much time someone spends in therapy depends a lot on the specific goals or needs that they have when they begin. People who are looking to develop basic skills or insights may see benefit in just a few sessions. For others, therapy can be a longer process as they learn to manage more complex or entrenched patterns. Finally, some people simply like to have the safety and security of a therapist who can help them continue to grow or address new problems as they come up. Ultimately, you as the client are in charge of what you are looking to get out of therapy. All of our therapists are committed to working with you to meet your needs.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

Like most private practice therapists in the DMV area, we do not currently take insurance. We are committed to helping you with the often frustrating process of dealing with insurance by filing the out-of-network claims for sessions ourselves whenever possible, so that you can prioritize the more important parts of life.

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

A limited number of sliding scale spaces are available. These spaces are based on financial need and rates are determined at the discretion of your individual therapist. Availability and sliding scale rate will be considered in conversation with your provider.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We ask that if you have to cancel a session, you let us know at least 48 hours in advance. We know that you can't always anticipate emergencies, so we also allow for two free late cancellations each calendar year. The full session fee will be charged for sessions canceled without 48 hours notice where both free cancellations have been used.

DO YOU USE ANY SPECIFIC KINDS OF THERAPY, LIKE CBT OR PSYCHOANALYSIS?

Each therapist has extensive and diverse training in clinical psychology. The specific therapy modalities that each therapist uses may vary, but every therapist at Capital Therapist Collective makes sure to use ones that have a solid base in research and evidence. Example modalities that are used by therapists at this practice include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal Process. If you have a desire for a specific form of therapy we will work to match you with a therapist whose skills best meet your needs.

IF I'M TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF D.C. CAN I STILL MEET WITH MY THERAPIST VIRTUALLY?

All therapists at Capital Therapist Collective maintain membership in an interjurisdictional compact called PSYPACT which allows them to continue to work with clients in select states. You can see which states are members of PSYPACT by looking at this map. If you are in one of these areas your therapist can work with you without issue!

DO YOU CONDUCT TESTING OR ASSESSMENTS?

Currently we do not conduct testing or psychological assessments for new clients at Capital Therapist Collective. Therapists may work with established clients to complete documentation for occupation or medical purposes based off of the information gathered through therapy.
